IT’S A WONDER

In San Jose, CA, the Winchester Mystery House ® is an architectural marvel and historic landmark that was once the personal home of Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester, William Wirt Winchester’s widow and heiress to a significant portion of the fortune of Winchester Repeating Arms.

Tragedy hit Sarah-her baby daughter died of a childhood illness and tuberculosis took her husband from her a few years later.

THE MOVE OUT WEST

Sarah left their home in New Haven, CT, shortly after the death of her husband, and moved west to San Jose, CA. There, she bought an eight-room farmhouse and began what could only be described as the longest home renovation in the world, stopping only on September 5, 1922, when Sarah passed by.

THESE ARE THE FACTS

From 1886 to 1922 construction seemingly never ceased as the original eight-room farmhouse grew into the world’s most unusual and sprawling mansion, featuring:

  • 24,000 square feet
  • 10,000 windows
  • 2,000 doors
  • 160 rooms
  • 52 skylights
  • 47 stairways and fireplaces
  • 17 chimneys
  • 13 bathrooms
  • 6 kitchens

Built at a price tag of the $5 million dollars in 1923 or $71 million today

IT’S A MYSTERY

But what was left is a mystery indeed. Rumours of a “mystery home” being designed by an eccentric and wealthy woman swirled long before her death. Was she advised by a psychic to create this home? Was she plagued by the ghosts of the “Gun that Took the West” fellers? Did the building never really stop? What inspired a well-educated socialite to cut herself off from the rest of the world and concentrate almost entirely on creating the most magnificent yet bizarre mansion in the world?

AHEAD OF HER TIME

Sarah Winchester, who lives on in legend, was a woman of freedom, drive, and bravery. And the mansion she designed is as popular worldwide for the many curiosities and inventions in architecture (many ahead of their time) as it is for the paranormal activity recorded inside these walls.

Since the doors opened on 30 June 1923, these mysteries and more have attracted over 12 million guests to visit the Winchester Mystery House ®. Will you be in a position to unlock the mystery?
