NUMU’s goal is to engage the community at the intersection of art , history and education through creative, locally linked and globally important exhibits, programs and experiences.
Mission
The mission of New Museum Los Gatos is “to engage the community at the intersection of art, history and education through innovative, locally connected and globally relevant exhibits, programs and experiences.”
Formerly Los Gatos Museums, the New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) opened in June 2015 with three times more exhibition space than the previous main venue, allowing it to create a cultural center for all ages with fresh perspectives on the culture , art and creativity of the San Francisco Bay Area of our time. The 50th anniversary of the Association of Museums took place in 2015.
The rebranding, renovation and re-opening was led by Executive Director Lisa Coscino, who assisted in the change and rebranding of the Monterey Museum (MoM) in 2011.NUMU consists of the collections of the former Los Gatos Art Museum on Tait Avenue and the Forbes Mill History Museum, formerly known as Los Gatos Museums, which were founded in 1965.
The New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) is pleased to present A Call to Collection: Whimsy Around the World, a show that celebrates and discusses the exploration of folk art collection, featuring prized works from the collection of Los Gatos residents Lee and Dr. Paul Quintana.
The Quintanas travel widely as Paul offers pediatric medical care to underserved populations around the world, including Mexico, South America, Asia and the Pacific, as well as West Africa and the Middle East. And after more than 40 years of traveling around the globe, the Quintanas have created a series of hundreds of works, some of which are cleverly reproduced or utilitarian artifacts and others that reflect the material cultures of the ancient, traditional and contemporary arts of each locality. The show is curated by Allison Railo.
There are two training programs in the Studio, the MakerSpace and the Atelier. The MakerSpace is a multi-faceted studio where students and their families can explore, discover and develop. This room provides practical seminars, family art days and open studio days for all levels to learn new methods of production under the guidance of expert artists and designers, as well as opportunities for the whole family to explore a range of materials, art styles and expressions. The services are influenced by current exhibits and the art and history seen in the galleries.
The Studio also houses the Atelier, which provides conventional creative training through full curriculum studio classes for artists of all levels to learn new skills and improve those they already have. Each student works with the teacher individually to decide their course of study. Drawing and painting workshops include: after-school art studio, morning or night classes, summer art studio, and visiting artist workshops.
NUMU welcomes artworks and objects as either unrestricted or limited gifts to the Museum’s Permanent Collection. Unrestricted gifts may or may not remain part of the Permanent Collection-in that they may be exchanged for other works of art or sold in support of the Permanent Collection of NUMU or other programs of the Museum. Limited gifts are only approved for perpetual use in the Permanent Collection. This could include items that are available for loan to other interested entities in whom we are a partner.
