Brought to you by Santa Clara County Parks and introduced for the first time in 1999, Fantasy of Lights is a dazzling 1.5 mile drive-Thru extravaganza of holiday lights and displays for the whole family. It is now in its 22nd year, and it has become a beloved holiday tradition. It’s bigger , stronger and brighter than ever before due to the transition to environmentally friendly LED displays.

The Drive-Thru will run from 4th to 30th December and will be closed on 25th December. Tickets for unique time slots (30 minute windows from 6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.) are needed for entry. You must buy a ticket before arrival, as no tickets will be available at the park entrance.

Of course, the desired time slots sell out first so buy quickly. If you don’t, you’ll end up with the 9 pm time slot on Christmas Eve, and unless you live in or around Los Gatos, chances aren’t ideal.

It seems like the whole city is based around this event during the Christmas season, because as soon as you reach Los Gatos, you’ll see signs of a light show appearing at every corner of the street leading visitors to Vasona Park. It’s like making a very odd detour.

Pro tip #1: wait 35-45 minutes to get to the front of the line. So, for example , if you purchase tickets at 9:00 a.m.-9:30 p.m. time slot and arrive at 9:00 p.m., you’ll be on the line and not actually start until about 9:45 p.m. If you have young people in your car, this will make a big difference when it comes to stuff like general boredom and going to the toilet.

Pro tip # 2: they always sell * days * in advance. If you die to do this, prepare ahead and get your tickets in advance.

They’re selling “3d glasses” which are really more like “kaleidoscope effect glasses.” They’re also only giving you two pairs per car even though you have 5 people in your car.

The showing itself is a lot of fun. It’s fun with the kaleidoscope lenses, but the novelty of that wears off, so everything looks more or less the same after a few minutes of looking through it. A short “tunnel” of lights was the only highlight of the experience.
